AGITATED OVER thrashing of an imam of Chaus-e-Azam mosque at Sujatganj area on Friday, thousands gheraoed the Rail Bazaar police station demanding suspension of Sujatganj police post in-charge and a constable.
However, the timely intervention of the Cantonment circle officer Dr Dharamveer averted confrontation between the residents and the police personnel. The citizens’ frayed tempers cooled only after the CO assured that Sujatganj police post in-charge Prabhu Singh and constable Ram Prakash Singh would be suspended.
A few days back, imam Hafiz Nisar Ahmed of the masjid had given an application requesting the Sujatganj police post in-charge to resolve his dispute with a mosque tenant in an amicable way.
The in-charge along with the constable reached the mosque and thrashed the tenant. However, upon objecting to the violent act of the police, the imam was given a sound beating by the cops. With tension mounting in the area, a fax was dispatched to the district magistrate on Thursday night.
On Friday, after the namaaz, thousands gathered outside the mosque. Addressing the turnout, several imams under the banner of Aimma Masajid flayed the police brutality and demanded immediate suspension of the two cops.
Earlier, Aimma Masajid had passed a resolution to gherao the Rail Bazaar police station with their demands. After coming to know of the protest, the Rail Bazaar police station CO rushed to the spot and tried to appease the angry people. He also tried to convince them that action had been taken against the constable and an inquiry into the involvement of the post in-charge was being considered.
This infuriated the mob and they flayed the lax attitude of the police department. The CO finally succeeded in defusing the volatile situation by making a commitment that Prabhu would also be suspended in a day or two.
