Eleven miners died in a gas explosion at a coal mine in northeastern China's Jilin Province early on Thursday morning, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The explosion occurred just after 2 am at the Xinyu coal mine in Baishan city, which is in a mountainous area about 100 kilometres (60 miles) from China's border with North Korea.
The 11 bodies were found five hours after the incident, the report said.
The cause of the explosion was under investigation, it added.
