Concern over depleting water table

District Magistrate Rajiv Agrawal focused on water management and said the need of the hour was to check the flow of water to overcome rising pressure on underground water.
Chief Development Officer RB Mishra said the State government was concerned about the declining state of underground water level across the state and to overcome the pressure on underground water, the government had fixed some percentage in the amount of development projects regarding rural areas of the districts.
He said this programme was organised with an objective to keep the people informed about the declining condition of underground water level. He added exploitation of underground water should be checked to save for the next generation. Senior scientist of the Underground Water Department, Shiv Shankar Singh said though the underground table in different development blocks like Cholapur, Badagon, Chiraigaon, Araziline, Pindra, Kashi Vidyapeeth, Harahua and Sewapuri was safe, public awareness was needed to combat any possible crisis of underground water.
He expressed doubts that ground water could be polluted in some areas of city such as Bazardeeha due to flow of coloured water. The water was coloured due to clothes being washed in it. He added the need of the hour was to check the water level as the ground water of this area could be polluted.
Senior scientists said as per the directive of the State government, around 40 peizometer had been set up in the city areas to monitor the under ground water level.
Meanwhile, in a function organised by the Coca-Cola Varanasi today to mark the state ground water day, District Magistrate Rajiv Agrawal dedicated Bhikhipur Pond Revival Project, set up at the Pratappur Gramsabha in Rajatalab area.
