Chowdhury led thousands of Congress supporters to submit the memorandum against SP Humayun Kabir, who had allegedly beaten a Congress supporter to death in custody, on January 7. But when the DM told them to hand it over to ADM (General) Niranjan Kumar, they turned violent, damaging a government vehicle, breaking flower vases and a smashing a sentry post in the Circuit House premises.

Later a huge police force and RAF jawans rushed to the scene and controlled the situation.
While television channels showed Congress workers running amok, throughout the day, Chowdhury claimed there was no vandalism at the DM’s office.
