They have both been invited to the annual Marathi literary meet in Pune on Sunday, and they have both confirmed their presence. But Chief Minister Ashok Chavan — after getting into a spot for sharing the dais with Amitabh Bachchan at the Bandra-Worli sea link on Wednesday — is unlikely to do it again.
Congress sources in Delhi said the party does not want a repeat of the “sea link fiasco” and has “directed” Chavan not to share the stage again.
“Please give me some time. I don’t want to comment on the issue now,” a visibly upset Chavan said on Friday.
Bachchan’s presence at the function upset local Congress leaders, who complained to the party high command. Sources said a section of the state Congress plans to write to Sonia Gandhi demanding that Chavan be sacked.
The party is also upset with its ally, the Nationalist Congress Party, for having invited the actor.
Congress leaders objected to Bachchan’s presence as the Gandhis and Bachchans developed differences two decades ago. Bachchan is also associated with the Samajwadi Party and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi.
