While talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, former chief minister of Rajasthan Gehlot said development work in UP had been adversely affected for the last 16 years.

Gehlot was here to participate in the concluding function of the Jan Vishwas Abhiyan Yatra. The yatra had started from Varanasi on February 14 and, after passing through several parts of eastern UP, it concluded in the city on Wednesday.

“The common people in UP are frustrated in the SP regime and are now in search of an alternative government in the State”, he said. “The time has come when Congress activists should rebuild their faith among the masses,” he added.

He alleged that UP had been reeling under poor conditions for the last 16 years, as several political parties came to power and affected the social system by dividing people in the name of caste and religion.

Poor law and order, inadequate power supply, improper irrigation system etc. were adding to the miseries of the masses, including farmers, youth and women, he further alleged.

“In order to strengthen the political ground of the Congress in UP, the State Congress has initiated several yatras and rallies across the State,” he said, adding that the party was getting a positive response from the common people.

Gehlot further said the Congress would also initiate several yatras, rallies and demonstrations in the future to regain its political ground in UP.

Responding to a query, Gehlot said the Congress-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance in the Assembly elections in UP a few years back was a major setback to the party.

“This alliance damaged the Congress in UP in which the Congress emerged as junior partner of the BSP despite the fact that it was one of the major parties even at that time,” he said. The Congress would contest the next Assembly election in its own capacity without any alliance, he added.

Earlier, addressing a public meeting after receiving the Jan Vishwas Campaign Yatra at the district headquarters, Gehlot called upon the Congress workers to go straight to the masses to regain its political ground.
