The Congress has alleged that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is contemplating to get the mayors of Municipal Corporations elected by the corporators only instead of the people.
The Congress leaders alleged that the same process was also being planned for the election of Chairman of various municipal corporations.
Addressing the gathering, district coordinator of the Congress party for the forthcoming municipal elections, Shankerdatt Mishra accused the Samajwdi Party Government of abetting crime and corruption in the State.
The very foundation of the SP-led government was based on fraud as by violating the anti-defection law, it came to power, stated Mishra.
Now, the SP was contemplating to get maximum number of Mayors elected by the same process, it adopted for the formation of State Government, added Mishra.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress MLA Sanjeev Dariabadi said, “Large scale rigging was done by the SP in the recently-concluded elections of Gram Panchayats and Block Pramukhs.”
The State Government was now planning to repeat the same in the municipal elections, added Dariabadi.
Former party MLAs Bodhar Narayan Mishra and party leader Hafiz Mohammed Umar also accused the State Government of planning to rig the forthcoming municipal elections.
A memorandum was also sent to Governor TV Rajeshwar by the district Congress president Abdul Mannan requesting him to take adequate action against the State Government.
Prominent leaders like Santosh Tripathi, Iqbal Ahmad, Gulab Singh, Meena Valmik and Munnalal Ambedkar were present on the occasion.
