Karnataka's ruling Congress party Saturday won the Humnabad seat in an assembly by-election held three days ago, thanks to a divided opposition.

Karnataka's ruling Congress party Saturday won the Humnabad seat in an assembly by-election held three days ago, thanks to a divided opposition.

Congress candidate Rajsekhar Patil defeated Subhash Kallur of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 9,804 votes in the February 26 by-poll.

Merajuddin Patel of the Janata Dal (Secular) was only 362 votes behind the BJP to grab the third spot. The final tally: Congress 38,758, BJP 28,954 and JD(S) 28,592 votes.
