Investigating officer (IO) from Mohanlalganj police station had requested the court that they wanted to interrogate the accused as it would help recover the sharp-edged weapon used in the crime.
Significantly, when the case was solved and the accused had taken the police team to the site of the murder, the cops had found Ankit’s mutilated body.
Vital parts of the body (head, arms and legs) were lying scattered at the spot on Dewa Road.
Circumstantial evidence had clearly suggested then that the boy was hacked to death. But, the cops were not ready to believe the substantial evidence and accepted the statement of the accused that the boy was strangled to death.
Senior police officials, after the arrest of the accused, had claimed Ankit’s body had been decomposed and the mutilation of the body into parts could be a result of animals gnawing at it.
The police theory, however, was ruled out soon as the post-mortem examination report stated that the gashes were caused by a sharp-edged weapon.
After their failure in rescuing the boy, it was another jolt for the police. Senior cops immediately ordered the policemen concerned to “cover up” the issue by seeking remand of the accused in court.
And, the court accepted the plea and allowed for the police remand.
While talking to HT Lucknow Live, SP (Rural) Rajiv Malhotra said the accused had concealed the fact about using a sharp-edged weapon to kill Ankit.
They have already recovered the car and collected call details from the cell phone used for making ransom calls. If they recovered the weapon too, it would help the prosecution nail the accused, said Malhotra.
When enquired whether the boy was killed in the car, Malhotra replied that the report was awaited from the forensic experts who had collected samples from the vehicle.
Moreover, the accused would be brought from the jail on Saturday as the remand had been granted only till then.
