TWO POLICEMEN of the Bara police station raped a Dalit woman at gunpoint on Monday night.

One of them was caught by the villagers and thrashed. The other managed to escape.
The incident comes after two rape attempts by policemen in the past four to five months.
When villagers besieged the police station and demanded immediate action, the Bara CO ordered lodging of an FIR against constable Rajendra Sharma who was caught red-handed. He was later suspended by the SSP.
But the constable neither revealed the name of his associate, nor did the Bara police make efforts to know his identity. This attitude of the police further angered the villagers who remained adamant on not lifting the siege.
The incident took place in Sehuda village. Two inebriated cops knocked on the door of a Dalit family. They threatened to break the door in case it was not opened. When the frightened couple opened the door, one of the constables pointed a pistol at the woman’s husband, while the other one raped her. While the second constable was about to commit the offence, the husband managed to run out of the house and raise an alarm.
Meanwhile, villagers nabbed one cop. When the police station officer came to know about the incident he came to the scene and took away the constable after persuading the villagers. Dissatisfied with police action, villagers in large numbers reached the police station.
About four to five months ago, a constable was nabbed by villagers who snatched his gun. The constable had attempted rape in Ganney village. The station officer, in this case also, had pacified the villagers and managed to take back the gun. However, he initiated no action against the constable, nor was the incident brought to notice of senior police officers. About a fortnight ago, four drunk constables tried to break into a house at night, but failed. The station officer took no action even though the incident took place behind the police station. Later, some persons brought it to the notice of the SP, who transferred one of the constables. An inquiry to be carried out by the CO was ordered by the SP, but the station officer is yet to relieve the transferred constable.
