Court summons Narayana Murthy over national anthem row
He said the national anthem's instrumental version was played as they did not want to 'embarrass' the foreigners present at the function.
A local court on Saturday summoned Infosys chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy to appear before it on June 21 in connection with his alleged insult to the national anthem.
The second additional chief metropolitan magistrate's court issued the summons in a criminal case filed by pro-Kannada activists.
Murthy landed in a controversy for his remarks that instrumental version of the national anthem was played at a function in Mysore in April because the company did not want to 'embarrass' the foreigners present there.
President APJ Abdul Kalam was the chief guest at the function held on the Infosys campus in Mysore.
Murthy's comments had led to a furore in the Karnataka assembly too with all the parties condemning him. Murthy had later apologised stating he was sorry if his comments had hurt the sentiments of the people and he had no intention to insult the national anthem.
Still private complaints had been filed against the Infosys mentor.
Murthy was not available for reaction and an Infosys spokesperson said he was abroad and had no comments to offer on the summons.
