The angry villagers said these CPI(M) leaders — Achinta Mallick, Srikanta Ghosh, Aswani Mondal, Sunil Malik, Sukumar Paramanik and Kartick Kumar Mondal – had misappropriated nearly Rs 6.5 lakh of the Saraitikar gram panchayat.

Trinamool Congress’ Seikh Jamal said, “I was not present there. Upon getting information I rushed to the spot and found villagers surrounding leaders and I promptly rescued them.”

CPM leader, Mehbub Alam said, “Some of our supporters had promptly informed the police, but it reached only after the incident.” He also told four persons were injured.

SP Burdwan Humayun Kabir, however, said he was not aware of the matter.
