Armed maoists knocked on the door of Pitambar Kumar Singh at around midnight last night and when he answered the call, shot him dead, Superintendent of Police, Kuldip Dwibedi told newsmen here.

Singh, who was posted at the naxal-infested Ghatsila sub-division in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district, was on leave.

His brother claimed he could identify one of the maoists, Dwibedi said.

An FIR had been filed in this connection and investigation was on.
