Talking to Hindustan Times, the vice-chancellor of the university, Dr VK Suri said during the past two decades there had been enough agro-research at different universities. The problem was that it did not reach the farmers.
“It was time to transfer laboratory knowledge to the real beneficiaries - the farmers,” he said. Introducing new technologies in farming was the only way to increase the crop production, which had gone down considerably in the recent years, he added.
“Under a new programme, farmers would be trained by the university scientists at their fields about the methods to use the required quality of fertilizers , seeds and equipments for ensuring scientific farming,” Dr Suri said.
Besides, they would also be informed about the ways to market their produce directly, removing the role of mediators.
A comprehensive plan was underway to help the farmers achieve better crop production, he said .
