A gang of eight dacoits, including a woman member, kidnapped the employees from government's Kanera Irrigation Project site in Kachhpura village in district's Chambal region on Sunday evening, they said.

The villagers nearby the site put up an armed confrontation for about 30 minutes to deter dacoits as soon as they got the news of abduction, but dacoits managed to escape with captives and rushed towards neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, they said.

The abducted have been identified as the site engineer of the company Sharad Jhanwar (32), mechanic Dilip Ojha (35), gunman Santosh Pachouri, driver Salim, Suresh Maheshwari of Bhind and Abhimanyu Tripathi of Gorakhapur, they said.

Police teams from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were rushed to the jungles in search of dacoits, they said adding that the entire area has been cordoned off.
