Before leaving the dacoits also attacked a tenant whose family had left for Varanasi on Friday. The shocking incident took place in Lal Vihara locality of Bamrauli under Dhumanganj police station at about 2 am on Saturday.
Police reportedly reached the spot nearly 45 minutes after the incident and were immediately engaged in a search operation but failed in their efforts. All the injured were rushed to the SRN Hospital where where Damyanti (38) was declared brought dead. The house-owner Devendra Misra who works as a technician in the press of a Hindi daily was on duty when the incident took place.
The dacoits numbering more than five entered the house with the help of a ladder found in the house of a neighbour, attacked members of both the families with rods and sticks and tied their hands and feet before leaving. They, however, spared Damyanti's 12-year-old daughter Deepika for unknown reasons.
Kamal, a tenant in the house who works in the same Hindi daily informed the landlord on his mobile after the dacoits had left.
The injured were identified as Govind (15) son of Devendra Misra, his sister Shubhawati (45), Amit (16) Shubhawati's son, and Devendra's eldest married daughter Pratima.
The dacoits used sticks and rods to hit close to the ear of each victim.
This is how tribal gangs like Bawarias strike at the victims, said a police officer.
Another example of the gang being a tribal is that they defecate in the victim's house in case their operation is successful. And this they did before leaving.
A similar dacoity was committed in Pratapgarh two years ago, says CO Rajeshwar Singh. Though he did not mention the name of Bawaria gang but said, dacoits belonging to Pasia tribe in Shahjahanpur had murdered doctor Ranu Tandon in Gomtinagar, Lucknow while they were looting the house.
Another such gang hails from Parbi tribe in MP while yet another gang operates from Meerut in UP. So, it is difficult to pinpoint which gang carried out the raid on this house.
Usually, such gangs camp at a distance of nearly 100 kilometres from the scene of crime. They either use their own vehicle or board the train. They usually throw away the tools they use as weapons and take no time in destroying all evidence. Gold and silver is melted and there is no system to identify the currency looted by them.
This makes police task very difficult. But still police teams have been despatched to various places to nab the gang which had come from outside the city, he added.
