An incident of damage to an Ambedkar statue in Rajasthan led to violence in Lucknow on Sunday.
Hundreds of Rajasthani labourers at the Ambedkar Memorial construction site stopped work and resorted to violence and clashed with police force. Several people were injured and vehicles damaged.
The violence lasted for five hours on the road in Gomti Nagar. One of the workers, Bhanwar Singh, had returned on Saturday night from his village, Raipur, in Rajasthan, and reported the incident of damage to an Ambedkar statue in the village. The labourers felt the damage to the statue was ‘desecration’of their ‘deity’. The distressed workers assembled on Sunday morning and went into a rampage.
They blocked the main Gomti Nagar road at three different spots—Ambedkar Memorial, Gomti Barrage and Gandhi Setu. All vehicles coning their way were attacked and damaged.
The anti-riot police force reached the spot after an hour and it had to cane the unruly workers.
