DIG, KANPUR range, Daljit Chowdhary and his team will receive the Gallantry Award from the President of India on the Republic Day for killing seven members of the dreaded Salim Gujjar gang last year.

Chowdhary has already been awarded the President’s Medal for eliminating Rajjan Gujjar and Lovely Pandey in another encounter.

In fact, the 1990 batch IPS officer boasts the best track record against dacoits as SSP Etawah with a total 32 eliminations in a span of just a year and a half.
It is for the first time that the President has approved eight persons for the gallantry award.

On May 15 last, Chowdhary while combing the ravines with the SOG team, came under gunfire near Bithauli village. In the gun battle, which lasted for two hours, Chowdhary and his team gunned down seven key members of the then most formidable Salim gang.

The killed members were identified as Raghunath Singh, Veer Singh aka Dau, Salim’s beaus Aarti Dohre, Imaman alias Hasina, Sunita alias Sapna, Amar Singh and Bhama Malla. The team also seized two semi-automatic rifles, ten guns, .38 bore Webley Scott revolver, two other rifles and a total 456 live cartridges from the encounter site. In addition, huge quantity of articles of daily use was also recovered.

The killed dacoits had a number of cases registered against them in police stations of Jalaun, Mainpuri and Bhind (Madhya Pradesh). In fact, it was this encounter that pushed Salim into oblivion and saw Arvind-Ramveer Gujjar surrendering in a MP court.

The Central government today awarded the Police Medal to State Director-General of Police Yashpal Singh for his meritorious service. Other recipients of the same award are DIGs GL Meena and Safi A Rizvi, SP Abhimanyu Tripathi and nearly two dozen other officers.

The President Police Medal has been given to DIG MP Singh, SP Anil Kumar and Deputy SP Ramesh Chandra.

The Gallantry Medal has also been awarded to SPs Krishna Bahadur Singh and Santosh Kumar, SIs Hariom and Nagesh Kumar, besides constables Rahim Khan, Rajesh and Hardeo Bahadur.
