David Beckham: The Real Hero

Beckham was already a fan favorite when he married Spice Girls star Victoria Adams ("Posh Spice") in July of 1999; the combination of the two heartthrobs proved irresistable to the press and public, and they became one of Britain's most famous couples.

Love him or loathe him there is only one David Beckham. Although he is now seen as a celebrity as well as a footballer, his skill on the pitch is without doubt. Whether he plays a domestic or international match, he can be relied upon to produce superb set pieces that often make the difference between winning and losing a match. He was one of Manchester United's biggest draws before switching to Real Madrid, a true footballer with an uncanny ability to score goals and get the crowd on its feet. He isn't particularly outspoken and has a reputation of being a family man. However, his temper is almost as well renowned as his latest hairdo and it has gotten him into a fair share of trouble. But in the end all Beckham wants to be is the best soccer player in the world.

As a player Beckham is particularly known for his free kick expertise, hot temper and spectacular long-range shots (including a famous goal from midfield against Wimbledon in 1996). In June of 2003, Manchester United sold Beckham to the Spanish team Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 35 million euros (about 25 million British pounds).
