Called the ‘Dawood Ibrahim’ of robbery, Suresh Shinde alias Surya — the alleged leader of a band of Pardhi men — was arrested at a sugar factory in Satara. Two of Shinde’s aides — Rajendra Kale (20) and Kalyan Shinde (20) — were also arrested.
Shinde and his gang are believed to have been behind six dacoities and eight housebreakings across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane over the last eight months.
“We will have some respite now,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria, speaking at a press meet on Tuesday. In an interview with HT on July 7, Maria had vowed to arrest Shinde within a month.
Shinde and 17 of his gang members were arrested in December 2005, but he ran away after he was released on bail in January.
Maria said Shinde may now be booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. “We will seek legal opinion before applying the stringent act,” he added.
