Talking to mediapersons, Dr Jawahar Lal Nigam, Ramesh Chand Tripathi, Akhtar Alam and others raised the question as to why did the police not lodge an FIR against the finance officer on the written complaint of Prof Rai? Blaming police and university officials for hatching a conspiracy against Prof Rai, they said the police were trying to attach the property of Prof Rai who had neither appeared before the court in the cases lodged against him, nor moved the court for bail.

In reply to a question, Dr Nigam and Tripathi denied the charges that student Sandeep Singh had used abusive language against the finance officer. They said as a part of the practical paper, Sandeep had gone to the finance officer for an interview on February 22 this year. They said it was unfortunate that the finance officer, along with the university police post incharge, reached the department and resorted to lathicharge on the students while they were in the classroom.

Tripathi blamed the university authorities for adopting double standards on the issue and demanded that the fake cases lodged against Prof Rai should be withdrawn.

They said that the convocation programme on March 10 in the university could face a jolt if the ongoing tussle between Prof Rai and the finance officer was not resolved amicably.
