The water resources department has included a dead engineer in the list of transferred engineers, a goof-up that comes close on the heels of the police absolving three youths of the charge of murdering a missing girl who surfaced three months after the "crime".
The water resources department had on June 27 transferred 188 engineers, among them Parasnath Rai, an engineer who had died much before the orders were issued.
Embarrassed by the error, the department has constituted a three-member investigation committee headed by engineer-in-chief Rajesh Solomon Tigga to find out why the dead engineer's name made it to the list and who was responsible for it.
Water resources minister Annapurna Devi confirmed the committee has been appointed. However, she attempted to explain it away saying the department has a large pool of engineers who are deputed to other departments.
In this case, she said, the death might have occurred while the engineer was on deputation to other department and there was delay in reporting his passing away.
"But this is no excuse. I am expecting the report of the committee soon. After that we will be able to decide on the nature of action to be taken against erring official or officials," she said.
The police recently told a court that three youths arrested on charges of murdering the missing Ranchi girl were innocent.
The police had recovered the body of a woman from Bundu area in the city in February and handed it to the father of the missing girl, who cremated it thinking it was that of his daughter.
However, the missing girl surfaced three months later and told the police the arrested trio was innocent and she had gone into hiding for personal reasons.
