Declare floods in J-K a national calamity: Azad

The Congress on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare floods in Jammu and Kashmir a national calamity.

The Congress on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare floods in Jammu and Kashmir a national calamity.

In a phone call to the Prime Minister from Srinagar, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad also requested him to launch rescue operations with the help of armed forces as had been done in Uttarakhand.

In a statement, Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed grave concern over the “calamitous” situation arising out of floods. Worried over the alarming loss of life, public infrastructure and private properties, Gandhi appealed to the government and authorities to ensure every effort at prevention, relief and rehabilitation.

She is in constant touch with the state leaders, taking regular updates about the ground situation.

On his part, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi lauded armed and paramilitary forces for risking their own lives to provide relief to the affected people.
