Old habits die hard. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils dished out a horrendous batting display reminiscent of their performances in the early half of the season. The meek surrender with the bat against tidy bowling on a slow wicket meant there was no way for the visitors to escape embarrassment. All that the Sunrisers had to do at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium was to stick to a consistent line. The Daredevils batsmen did the rest by attempting too many unnecessary shots to dig the grave for themselves.
When Darren Sammy's pacifier was out for the first time, after he bowled Virender Sehwag as he tried to make room for a cut, the frustration had already set in. Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma had bowled tight opening spells, extracting whatever juice there was in the wicket.
Having scored just 32 for one in seven overs, the visiting batsmen tried to get a move on. On a pitch where playing with a straight bat was imperative, the
Daredevils preferred the cross-batted shots. Unmukt Chand was bowled trying to cut Steyn and David Warner was stumped as he danced out to leggie Amit Mishra.
Ultimately, the Daredevils capitulated for 80, a record low and their second sub-100 score of the season, this after electing to bat. Sunrisers wrapped up the game with six wickets in hand, almost certainly shutting the door on Delhi's play-off chances.
