A 40-year-old man threw acid on a woman who had lodged a molestation complaint against him in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony on Monday evening. The man was apparently miffed as a court had rejected his anticipatory bail application twice.

The woman, 22, however, was lucky and suffered minor burns only on her legs. She is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital. Police said the woman was traumatised at the incident.

According to the police, the incident took place when the woman, a BA correspondence student, was on her way to her tuitions.

The woman, identified as Khushnuma, was walking towards the tuition centre when two men came on a motorcycle and attacked her with acid after a brief altercation at the Sunday Bazaar area of Geeta Colony.

“The woman in her complaint claimed that she was attacked with acid by her neighbour Jumman against whom she had filed a case of molestation one and half months ago. She told us that Jumman and his friend, who is yet to be identified, deliberately stopped her after which an argument broke out,” said a senior officer.

During the altercation, Jumman took out a bottle of acid and tried to pour it on her body.

Khushnuma managed to dodge him and the bottle fell on the ground, inches from her body, because of which she suffered burn injuries in her leg. Jumman and his friend managed to flee.

Ajay Kumar, DCP (east), said, “A case under Section 326 B (acid attack) of IPC was registered at the Geeta Colony police station against Jumman and his aide. Efforts are on to nab them.”

Preliminary investigation into the incident, Kumar said, revealed that Khushnuma had filed a molestation case against Jumman.

“Jumman has been evading arrest in the case and had applied for anticipatory bail twice. But both his applications were rejected,” he added.
