The demand for woollen clothes, coal and kerosene oil has shot up in the city.

Though the district administration has not yet confirmed any death due to intense cold sweeping the region for the last two weeks, sources said four dozen people had died so far.

District magistrate Dr Hariom said there was no official information regarding death due to cold. Post-mortem had not confirmed any death due to cold, he added.

The lowest temperature recorded here was 12.8 degree Celsius. The cold spell affected normal life.

Meanwhile, the municipal corporation had increased the number of bonfires that will be lit at several places in the city. Deputy municipal commissioner Gopi Krishna Srivastav appealed to non-government and social organisations to come forward to help the homeless. He admitted that bonfires were not enough to beat the cold.
