DHD-J calls truce

Jolted by the arrest of its chairman Jewel Gorlosa and the encounter death of its 'foreign secretary' Frankie Dimasa, the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) group has announced a three-month unilateral ceasefire. Rahul Karmakar reports.

Jolted by the arrest of its chairman Jewel Gorlosa and the encounter death of its 'foreign secretary' Frankie Dimasa, the Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel) group has announced a three-month unilateral ceasefire.

The ceasefire is effective from Sunday.

"We have decided on a truce with the security forces under the circumstances," said DHD-J commander-in-chief Niranjan Hojai in a faxed letter to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

Meanwhile, David Dimasa, one of the four top commanders of the outfit, accused the police of trapping Gorlosa by dangling the talks carrot.
