In the wake of large number of kidney patients reported every day, four new dialysis machines have also been installed at the SRN's dialysis unit. The two old dialysis machines, which had been lying defunct for several months, have also been repaired for the convenience of the patients.
The patients will have to pay about Rs 500 for each dialysis, which is less than half the amount charged by the private hospitals and nursing homes. The two new dialysis machines were recently sanctioned by the State Government in view of the proposed inspection by Medical Council of India, said Dr PC Saxena, principal of the MLN Medical College.
Dr Saxena said two dialysis machines were purchased a few months back and the other two were recently purchased for the MCI inspection. The funds were sanctioned by the State Government. However, with the installation of four new machines the kidney patients have got much needed relief. As in the past the dialysis unit was lying closed due to technical reasons. Many patients were forced to pay heavy amount to private hospitals for a single dialysis, he said.
It may be recalled that SRN Hospital's dialysis unit remained closed for over six months. The dialysis machines reportedly supplied on contractual basis were lying out of order.
However, the sources said that some senior staff of the medical college were not 'really' interested in re-starting the uni’t. "As the unit was closed for a long time, most of the kidney patients were referred to private hospitals for a heavy commission. Moreover, this also saved a lot of time of some doctors in the hospital for private practice," said the sources.
