DIG unhappy over rise in crime graph

The situation is disconcerting. DIG's repeated dossiers to the SSP expressing concern over increase in crime under various heads has failed to evoke the desired impact. Close on the heels of a recent warning DIG Akhilesh Mehrotra has again expressed unhappiness over the crime scene in the district through a missive to the SSP.

The manner in which things are moving, 'it appears neither you were being able to provide the required guidance to your subordinates nor the latter were taking things seriously'. This situation is objectionable, says the missive.

His repeated suggestions in respect of controlling crime were also not being followed. After appraisal of crime figures in the month of September the DIG has again pointed out frequent transfers of station officers as detrimental to controlling crime. There has also been no let-up in the forays made into the district by outside criminals who were increasingly involving themselves in acts of crime in the district.

The recent sensational crimes were all committed by outsiders in the district. In view of the approaching festival and the upcoming Ardh Kumbh it was imperative to give a fresh look to the crime.

This was necessary for effective prevention of incidents, stated the missive.

The month of September saw a sudden spurt in crime under several heads in comparison to the same period last year. This has happened due to ineffective handling of the situation, pointed the DIG.

This includes cases of harassment of women, rape, sexual assault, dowry related suicides, chain snatching, murder of SC/ST women, rape, burglary, theft of arms, vehicles, general theft, critical injuries due to assault, kidnapping for ransom, kidnapping and murder etc.

Last September witnessed only three cases of murder but eight murders were committed this year during the same period.

Besides suggesting the SSP to take effective steps in preventing crime the DIG has also directed the SSP to take stern action against those subordinates who were found slack in carrying out the directives.

Cops have also been asked to identify 20 wanted outlaws and take effective steps against them to put some break on the crime pedal.
