This decision has been taken recently by Municipal Commissioner Satya Narayan Srivastava after considering all pros and cons.

He told HT Allahabad Live that there were several houses especially in old city area which were over 100 years old and proving to be a bane. If these buildings were not demolished then any major mishap might occur anytime , said the Municipal Commissioner.

He said that the NN had started work of identifying such buildings in the city area. Junior engineers and tax inspectors had already been asked to report dangerous buildings so that notices could be issued to the owners immediately.

The owners of such houses would be asked to raze to the ground such buildings themselves and if they failed to do so then NN team would carry out the demolition besides realising the penalty.

Sources said that except City North, several old buildings situated in old city area were on the verge of collapse. However, unfortunately, these are still being used for residential purpose.

Interestingly, ownership of majority of these houses is disputed. As a result the claimants of such building did not take any interest to get them repaired.

It may be recalled that nearly six years ago one person was killed and a dozen others were injured in collapse of an old house in Chowk area. Later, the Nagar Nigam had to face a tough time in removing the debris of the said house because of congested area.

He said that NN has also brought this matter to the notice of the district administration for seeking their co-operation on the issue. NN engineers have been asked to suggest as to what kind of operation is possible in the most congested parts of the city, he added.
