It is for the second time in a week that village women have hit the streets to protest unabated sale of illicit liquor and this has become a cause of worry for the police and district administration.

Alarmed by frequent demonstrations and brewing resentment, the administration has prepared a programme to check the illicit liquor trade in the district. In a joint Press conference, district magistrate Dr Hariom welcomed the peoples’ protest and assured the district administration, along with locals, would launch a crackdown.

On the other hand, at the Press conference, the SSP and district magistrate warned people that stringent action would be taken against those who block traffic movement or caused public inconvenience in the name of protest.

Dr Hariom said the villagers of Khorabar had given a memorandum to district administration but they had not informed about their programme properly.
Responding to a question Dr Hariom said village head, a watchman and beat constable would be responsible to check manufacture of hooch and stressed to check the social crime.

SSP Raja said no change could come overnight and a sustainable effort was the need of the hour.

The district magistrate said the administration had introduce a programme at Tehsil level and the SDMs were directed to send monthly report regarding the functioning of lekhpals in their respective tehsil.

He said the district administration had received names of 20 lekhpals of various tehsils identified as “most incapable” lekhpals by the SDM.

Giving out the numbers of errant lekhpals, he said in Bansgaon tehsil Babu Lal, in tehsil Gola five lekhpals including Ganesh Dubey, Sankata Dubey, Ram Jiyawan, Shivram Vajpayee and Dhunmun Prasad had been identified for slackness in the duty.

In Chauri Chaura tehsil four, in Sahjanwa three, in Sadar Tehsil four and in Campierganj tehsil four lekhpals were paying heed to the warning of their immediate officials.

Dr Hariom said the administration had recommended departmental action against them.
