A USUALLY shy Vineet smiled with confidence on Wednesday while leaving Vivekanand Polyclinic.

Reason? He successfully got his right-cheek depression filled up.
Combining craniofacial surgery with micro-vascular tissue transfer, the doctors successfully rejuvenated the face of this youth, in just one operative session.
The procedure clinically requires two or more surgical procedures and that too do not give a perfect result. This is because the doctors usually take fat to fill in the deformed portion of the face.
Fat tissues get contracted due to no blood vessel link. But, the micro-vascular transfer of tissues allows a doctor to connect the transferred tissue with arteries.
Thus the doctors here opted for a micro-vascular tissue transfer from the patients’ body and even avoided filling of fat in the inward curve on the right side of the face.
“Vineet required three major things where the first was bone remodelling, soft tissue transfer and then correcting of ear to get him a perfect smile,” said Dr Vaibhav Khanna, who performed the critical surgery.
The portion of flesh taken out from patient’s back was anatomically designed to match perfectly with the requirement on the face. This was done to avoid access accumulation of flesh.
“We joined the transferred tissues with the temporal arteries of the patient.
Advanced genioplasty was also done in the same operative session to give shape to the chin,” said Dr Khanna.
Vineet has been advised to avoid exposure to dust and other foreign bodies for a few weeks. He would only require fat injections in case the tissues shrink inside his face skin and after that he could walk normal.
“People usually go for cosmetic surgery to fill in the depressed portion on the body but the fact is that fat cells shrink while tissue transfer with micro-vascular surgery comparatively gives far better result,” Dr Khanna said.
It may be mentioned that the technique of micro-vascular surgery is stated as one of the best options for people suffering with oral cancer too. This helps to give them back their original face shape.
