The Government Railway Police (GRP), along with the State police, will launch a joint drive to check cases of crime on trains.
In the first phase, dog squads of the GRP will be deployed at Lucknow and Allahabad railway stations. A meeting of the chief security commissioner of different divisions of the Railways was held with a senior government official in Lucknow in this connection.
It was decided that monthly meetings would be held with the Railway security commissioner and the director general of police of the State concerned.
According to railway sources, director general (Law and Order) RK Tiwari, additional director general (GRP) VK Bhalla, chief security commissioner of Railways Jaya Singh Chauhan and other senior officials participated in the meeting.
They stressed the need for better coordination between the GRP and the State police to check incidents of crime.
Sources said the recent incidents on the Pushpak Express and the Kaifiyat Express had put railway officials in a tight spot. They decided to tighten security arrangements on running trains from Delhi to Bihar and Bihar to Delhi. Security has also been beefed up in view of Republic Day.
Since most such crimes were committed in general compartments, it was felt that all general compartments should be placed in a row.
Besides, Railway officials also discussed incidents of food poisoning on running trains and it was decided to engage caterers to supply eatables to passengers.
Railway sources said security personnel would be equipped with walky talkies.
Officials have decided to take stern action against GRP personnel found guilty of dereliction of duty.
According to sources, a representative of the principal secretary (Home) said there was a 30 per cent decline in cases of crime on trains in UP.
