Dog sterilisation a costly affair

While the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) spends Rs 100 on a family planning operation for a human, the sum spent on the sterilisation of a dog is as high as Rs 450 to Rs 500.
While the money spent on family planning of human beings is borne by PMC, in the case of dogs’ sterilisation the Animal Welfare Board of India incurs the charges.
According to the Blue Cross Society, which is involved in the amelioration and sterilisation of animals, every dog brought to its vasectomy centre is given various kinds of treatments.
“We keep the dog at our centre for around seven days to sterilise. Considering various kinds of injections and treatment, the amount spent per dog sterilisation goes to Rs 370”, said Arun Ahir, in-charge of Blue Cross Society sterilisation centre.
The PMC is responsible of catching and releasing the dogs after sterilisation.
The expenditure done by the PMC and the society on a dog’s sterilisation goes up to Rs 450 to 500.
“PMC squad traps the stray dogs and the entire process consume workforce and money, which is included in their salary”, said Narendra Thakur, health officer attached to PMC dog control cell.
As per the PMC figures, more than 4,000 dogs were sterilised in the year 2008 while previous year saw 3,033 cases of dog sterilisation.
