Domino's Pizza launches gluten-free pizza crust

The largest pizza delivery chain in the world is the latest major food retailer to jump on the gluten-free trend with a new crust targeted towards customers with gluten sensitivities.

Domino's Pizza, which has outlets in 60 countries around the world, announced the launch of its new gluten-free crust which will become a menu option for customers in the US.

While the new recipe is certified gluten-free and is appropriate for those with mild gluten sensitivities, both the chain and its partner, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, advised that the product is not recommended for those with celiac disease, a digestive condition triggered by the consumption of gluten.



Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats, causes an immune reaction that damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents the absorption of certain nutrients.



Meanwhile, other major food chains have likewise addressed the gluten-free trend by either publishing guidelines for gluten and celiac sufferers, or launching new menu items of their own.



Burger chain Wendy's, for instance, has a gluten-free primer that offers celiac sufferers a list of menu items without gluten.



Chinese bistro and family style restaurant chain P.F. Chang's offers a separate gluten-free menu that includes starters, sides, desserts and entrees like caramel mango chicken, Mongolian beef, and ginger chicken with broccoli.



And family-style restaurant chain Chili's, which has outposts in regions like the Middle East, Asia, and South America, also has a user-friendly gluten-free menu for customers which, nevertheless, comes with a caveat that no guarantees can be made.



US chain The Olive Garden likewise offers a similar gluten-free menu.
