DoT may extend subscriber verification deadline

The department of telecommunications (DoT) is likely to extend by three months the deadline for re-verification of telecom subscribers under know-your-customer norms for law enforcement purposes. The government had fixed October 31 as the deadline earlier but the operators had not finished their task. Sources said 10% of the total subscribers are yet to be verified.

“The telecom service providers are putting in their serious efforts for re-verification. Hence, there is no need for taking any action against them,” said an official of the DoT.

In September last year, the government asked all the operators to re-verify all the customers. This means that only those customers that got registered before September, 2009 will be verified again. Hence only old operators such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, RCOM and Tata are effected by this order.

Sources said that the government–owned BSNL has also not completed verification of subscribers.
