IN A RARE show of courage, a woman broke the matrimonial alliance, as the man she was going to marry, demanded a motorcycle.

When she refused to marry, her family members detained the bridegroom’s party and demanded Rs 32,000 from them. They were allowed to go only when the money was paid.
The incident took place at the Kushmanda Guest House in Gahatampur, 45 km from the district headquarters on Sunday. According to reports, Ramlal Savita, a businessman from Krishna Nagar, had fixed daughter Vineeta’s marriage with Rajan who lives in Unnao.
When the bridegroom’s party (baraat) reached the guest house on Sunday night, they were accorded a rousing welcome. Meanwhile, some women members of Ramlal’s family objected to the quality of jewellery Rajan had brought for Vineeta.
The issue turned into a major controversy whenRamlal was asked to arrange for a motorcycle and money for the bus the ‘baratis’ hired to reach Ghatampur. As Rajan’s family stuck to their demand, left the Mandap, refusing to marry Rajan.
Her decision shocked the members of the bridegroom’s party and all efforts to iron out the differences came to knaught .
The bridegroom’s family was allowed to go when they agreed to pay the marriage expenses.
