Blaming India's premature exit in the ICC Champions Trophy on batting failure, former cricketers on Monday said non-performing players should be rested and that it was time the team management started looking for fresh talent.

Former Test cricketers Madan Lal and Chetan Chauhan laid the blame for India's defeat to Pakistan in the decisive league match on Sunday at the doorstep of the batsmen.

"We are carrying a lot of players who are out of form. In any other team, they would have been dropped," Chauhan said on Monday.

"We played very badly, starting from the captain. We had no plan while taking on Pakistan in a big match, it was shocking," he said.

Madan Lal was aghast with the way the batting lineup was messed up.

"I can't understand Rahul Dravid coming in at number six. He is a technically sound batsman and should be coming in at three," he said.
