A rumour about an earthquake striking the region early on Tuesday kept people out of their houses at many places in Punjab, with some heading for temples and gurudwaras.
As the rumour about an earthquake striking the region just before 6 am spread, people at many places in the state came out of their houses and started roaming on roads while some prefered to offer prayers.
Police in Chandigarh said that the rumour about a tremor striking the region had originated somewhere in Punjab.
"We received frantic calls about the possibility of quake. We checked with the meteorological department, but their is no such thing," a police official said in Chandigrah.
People could be seen coming out of their houses as the rumour had predicted its strong possibilty after the solar eclipse earlier this week.
