An NGO Guria led by its chairman Ajit Singh had raided the Shivdaspur red light area in Varanasi on October 25,2005 and had rescued 31 minor girls who were engaged in prostitution.
They also got a first information report registered against several persons. Those released on bail included Poornima, Afsana, Tara, Abdul Hameed, Lalloo, Kali, Rajesh and Lalita.
This incident had received wide media attention and many social organizations had praised Guria for taking a bold step to rescue minor girls from prostitution.
Passing the bail order, Justice GP Srivastava observed, “Search of the premises can be made by a special police officer which is very relevant for the purpose of bail.”
It may be recalled that there had also been some protests against the non-government organisation Guria’s action, with some alleging that it was pandering to vested interests.
