IN A first-of-its-kind initiative, the Electric Loco Shed (ELS) of Kanpur has attained technical capability to undertake complex repair work of the wheel sets of high speed electric engines, which are put to use for hauling superfast trains. With this, the repair of wheel sets will take less time and the locos will be available more frequently thus ensuring better and quicker services to the passengers.

Disclosing about this the North Central Railway chief public relation officer, Bagish Pandey said that with this facility, wheel sets of high speed electric engines will be made available for hauling all the super fast trains in minimum time directly benefiting the passengers of trains like Prayag Raj, Shatabdi, Rajdhani and other superfast trains which are connected to ABB (Asea Brown Boweri-a Swedish company) engines.
While elaborating about this new development, Pandey informed, that earlier the repairing of wheel sets of ABB engines were done at Kanchrapa workshop in West Bengal and Bhusawal workshop in Maharashtra.
The locomotives could not be put to use until the wheel sets got repaired from these workshops and due to this the engines or locos could not be utilized to their full capacity.
He said that this is the first loco shed of the Indian Railways to take up the work on the directives of the Railway Board. He further informed that the work will substantially reduce the down time of WAP 7 locos (a type of loco which is being manufactured at Chitranjan locomotive) and these locos will be made available for hauling superfast trains in minimum time.
