Envoy urges Indians to invest in Iraq

Iraqi ambassador to India Muayad S Hussein said that after polls his country offers many opportunities to Indian businessmen.

Iraqi ambassador to India Muayad S Hussein on Friday said that after its elections, his country offers many opportunities to Indian businessmen who should renew their old ties with the war-ravaged country.

"In the new Iraqi scenario, there are lots of opportunities for the Indian business community who can re-establish their old positions," Hussein said.

"India had been very actively involved in constructing Iraqi economy during the last several decades. Indians have long experience in working in that region and Iraq can benefit from their expertise," he added.

Hussein was addressing a joint news conference with US ambassador David C Mulford. The Iraqi envoy said he appreciated India's "positive stance" and hoped for more help in reconstructing the country. "We need all kinds of help to rebuild the country," he said. "I hope we will receive more and more help from the Indian government." US ambassador Mulford hailed the Iraqi elections as a "gigantic step from one world to a new world".
