That people start resembling their pets is something that most of us, including Maneka Gandhi, already know. That people start looking like their longtime partners is, however, a minor revelation — and perhaps a worrying one to people with spouses who are aesthetically challenged (a politically correct editorial device to describe ugly people). Researchers at the University of Liverpool have found out that longtime couples can be identified by ‘blind' tests simply by virtue of the facial similarities that have crept up between them. So why will Kajol start to look more and more like Ajay Devgan as their marriage holds strong? The answer, as in 99 per cent of all things in this world, seems to lie in biology.

The shaping of one's face is apparently linked to the experience one has in one's life. And as anyone in a marriage or a long-term relationship knows, sharing one's life with somebody really boils down to sharing experiences. Testosterone is linked to masculine facial shapes and also affects behaviour. So by that reckoning, men are more liable to start looking like their wives after years of cohabitation. That means Kajol fans — including Devgan, we presume — letting out a huge sigh of relief.

Another interesting point to have come out in the study is that the whole thing about opposites attracting is bunkum. A person usually likes a person who is like him. To make that a bit clearer — sameness attracts. Which in turn could explain why the reverse also holds true: two people attracted by each other can, after a point of time, become similar. Wonder what would happen if Abhishek Bachchan decides to share the rest of his life with someone like Aishwarya Rai. Stranger things have happened.
