A police official said one of the girls, who were studying Arts, consumed some poisonous substance after she failed to clear the Education paper. She was taken to the district hospital, where her condition was said to be stable.

"She had worked hard, but the result shook her. She saw the result herself and wanted to end her life," her sister told local media.

"The other girl, also from the same town, attempted suicide after learning that she had failed in Political Science and Education papers. She was admitted to the Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and later, her condition was reported to be stable," he added.

The two boys who had topped the examination also belonged to Handwara.
