DISTRICT POLICE nabbed a person allegedly involved in circulating fake currency notes, in Surajkund area under Tiwaripur police station on Tuesday and seized 498 fake currency of Rs 50 denomination from his possession. Police were trying to take the accused on remand for interrogation as they hoped to get important clues on the network of the inter-state gang involved in the illicit trade.

The criminal was identified as Chumman Pandey alias Devta Pandey, a resident of Salempur town of Deoria district. Police station incharge of Tiwaripur, Ramji Chaudhary, said acting on a tip off, inspector Shashi Bhushan Mishra, Ashok Singh and others arrested Devta Pandey near Surajkund crossing on Tuesday.
After intense interrogation Pandey reportedly revealed some important clues.
Pandey allegedly confessed that counterfeit currency printed in Pakistan was supplied into India through Nepal. He said the gang members infiltrated through Veerganj border on Indo-Nepal border in Bihar. He further said that the large amount of counterfeit currency was brought to Siwan from where it was circulated in Kushinagar, Deoria, Maharajganj and other districts of the division.
Pandey revealed the names of Misbahul and Tabrez who assisted him in this trade. He said he had come here to supply these fake notes to Shivcharan, a resident of Tiwaripur locality.
It is to be noted that fake currency racket is thriving in the district, incurring heavy loss to the economy.
