In a letter to district magistrates and commissioners, UP Chief Secretary Navin Chandra Bajpai said they would be held responsible in case any farmer committed suicide in their areas due to poverty or debt burden.

The district chiefs would be held responsible if farmers were subjected to atrocities for recovery of revenue or debt dues, he said, asking them to carry out a thorough review of welfare schemes by officials of different departments.

Badaun District Magistrate Ajay Kumar said that the government has also accepted that poor people were not actually benefitting from the welfare schemes.
