A LARGE number of farmers under the banner of Khet Kissan Bachchao Sangharsh Samiti staged a demonstration and blocked traffic movement at the Mohansarai crossing for two hours on Friday. They were registering their protest against the establishment of the proposed hi-tech City between Mohansarai and Rohania.

The State government has given its final nod to a multi-national company, Unitech, for the establishment of proposed hi-tech City between Rohania and Mohansarai on 2,200 acre land in Varanasi.

Farmers, including women and kids assembled at the Mohansarai Crossing as per pre-scheduled programme and staged a ‘chakka jam’ for two hours. Vehicular traffic was completely paralysed on this route.

The farmers strongly criticized the Samajwadi Party for playing with the interests of farmers in the name of development. They said they never allowed the State government to acquire the fertile land in the name of development.

They said that it was not fair to acquire fertile land for the development of city instead of developing city on infertile land.

Convenor of Khet Kissan Bachchao Sagharsh Samiti Heera Lal demanded that the State government should withdraw the proposal of acquisition of land, which was submitted by the Varanasi Development Authority to the State government and cancel the establishment of hi-tech city in Varanasi.

He warned if the State government did not consider their demands, they would stage a similar chakka jam at Karauta Bazar on July 20 and also gherao of State Assembly soon.

Later, the farmers handed over a memorandum to ACM (IIIrd) to be forwarded to the Chief Minister. Leaders of several political parties including CPI (M-L), CPI (M), Forward Bloc, Samajwadi Janata Party, Jan Morcha etc., participated in the protest.
