Navy chief resigns after two sailors go missing, 7 injured in navy accident

Navy chief admiral DK Joshi resigned on Wednesday, hours after seven sailors suffered serious injuries and two officers remained "unaccounted for" in an accident on board India's Russian-built submarine, INS Sindhuratna.

The latest accident --- 11th after the INS Sindhurakshak sank in August --- has put the navy's dismal safety record under further scrutiny and underlined its inability to maintain its dwindling Kilo-class fleet.

Joshi's resignation has been accepted by the government. A defence ministry spokesperson said he had stepped down taking moral responsibility for the recent accidents.

Supreme Court directs arrest of Sahara chief

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a non-bailable warrant against Sahara chief Subrata Roy after he failed to appear in connection with a case in which his company was directed to return Rs. 20,000 crore to investors.

Roy's counsel Ram Jethmalani told the apex court that the Sahara chief could not come as he had to rush to Lucknow to see his ailing mother.

Jethmalani requested that more time be given to him for his appearance adding that he wasn't shying away from appearing before it. The apex court rejected the submissions and said the same were dismissed by it on Tuesday when Jethmalani had sought Roy's exemption from personal appearance.

Paswan a step away from sealing deal with BJP

Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan has signed and sealed a deal with the BJP for Bihar's 40 Lok Sabha seats, asserting on Wednesday that the possibility of aligning with Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) was "out of the question".

The veteran leader – who quit the NDA in protest against the 2002 communal riots of Gujarat – is scheduled to meet the BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thurday.

A formal announcement on the tie-up is scheduled for Friday.

Opinion polls should be authenticated: Kejriwal

Election opinion polls conducted by media should be properly authenticated, former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday.

A day after a Hindi television news channel carried out a sting operation that indicated a political conspiracy to manipulate public opinion, Kejriwal said the sting operation aired by the channel, if assumed to be authentic, represents a dark hour for the Indian media.

"It shows that political parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party have been buying favourable service to manipulate public opinion," the Aam Aadmi Party leader said.

Khurshid calls Modi impotent, won't apologise

The Congress on Wednesday took its anti-Narendra Modi rhetoric to a high pitch by calling the BJP prime ministerial candidate impotent, accusing him of failing to protect the people killed in 2002 Gujarat carnage.

"Modi was not able to stop his own minister, Maya Kodnani, from presiding over a massacre. He could not protect a mob which killed (former Parliament member) Ehsan Jafri," minister of external affairs Salman Khurshid said.

"What should I say if not impotent? Impotent means he failed to do what he was supposed to do. Modi was incompetent to stop the violence. He didn't have the capability to stop what happened," the minister said.

UP cops claim parrot helped crack murder case

Uttar Pradesh police on Wednesday claimed a parrot helped them crack a five-day-old murder case.

Neelam Sharma, a homemaker and wife of the editor of a local Hindi newspaper, Vijay Sharma, was found murdered at her home on the night of February 20 in Balkeshwar locality of Agra. People noted a change in the behaviour of the pet parrot whenever a relative, Ashutosh Sharma Goswami, came to the house. "It sulked every time Ashutosh passed its cage," a relative said.

Growing suspicious, the victim's family started taking names of possible suspects in front of the parrot. When Ashutosh's name was taken, the parrot started shouting 'Usne maara, Usne maara' (He has killed), Ajay said.

Ukraine disbands police unit accused of violence

Ukraine's acting interior minister on Wednesday ordered the disbandment of a feared riot police force that many accuse of attacks on protesters during the country's three-month political turmoil.

Arsen Avakov wrote on his Facebook page that he has signed a decree to disband the force known as Berkut and said more detail would be announced later.

Anti-government protesters have blamed Berkut for violent attacks against peaceful demonstrators protesting authorities' decision to ditch closer ties with the European Union and turn to Moscow instead.

US couple finds $10mn in buried treasure while walking dog

A trove of rare Gold Rush-era coins unearthed in California last year by a couple as they walked their dog may be the greatest buried treasure ever found in the United States, worth more than $10 million, a currency firm representing the pair said on Tuesday.

The 1,400 gold pieces, dating to the mid- to late 1800s and still in nearly mint condition, were discovered buried in eight decaying metal cans on the couple's land last April, said coin expert David McCarthy of currency firm Kagin's.
