Students will have to pay more to enroll in most colleges and universities from the new academic session. A fee hike has been recommended for colleges and universities where the fee adds up to less than 20 per cent of the total income.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has asked the University Grants Commission (UGC) to ask such universities and colleges to enforce the new fee structure.

The HRD ministry had sought a grant of Rs 2,379 crore for 18 Central universities, 200 state universities and for hundreds of UGC-funded colleges from the Planning Commission. But the request was turned down. The hike is to supplement the revenue of the institutions.

There are only some universities where the fee is over 20 per cent of the total income. Bombay University (39 per cent), Kerala University (30.1) and Madras (46.8 per cent) fall in this category.
