Ferrari will wait for Rossi, says Brawn

Ferrari have opened their doors to world motorcycling champion Valentino Rossi and suggested they are prepared to wait for him to decide whether he wants to join them in Formula One in the future.

Rossi has impressed the Italian team in two tests so far and earlier this month Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn claimed he might be given the opportunity to test monthly next season in preparation for a possible Grand Prix debut in 2007.

Rossi knocked down those suggestions, insisting he wants to focus on the MotoGP championship with Yamaha next year, but Brawn has now promised the ball is back in the Italian rider's court.

"Obviously he is the final arbitrator of what he does," said Brawn.

"I would hope that if Valentino wanted to get into Formula One he would do it with Ferrari, because it is a nice combination.

"He has done two tests for us now, he got on very well with our people and our guys found it very exciting to have him there, so naturally it is very attractive but I think he will look at all his options.

"He will make his decision when he has to make it, nobody is holding a gun to his head, and he has to make the decisions he feels are right for him. But we would certainly be interested in working with him in the future."

Rossi has been linked to a switch from two wheels to four having dominated the motorcycling world championship for many years but he has always been contradictory in his comments about a move to Formula One.

Brawn believes Rossi must be fully committed if he wants to have a chance of succeeding in Formula One and while he will not move if he does not have the car to win, Ferrari would not sign him unless he proved his worth.

That is why Brawn suggested the possible testing programme and he admitted: "I probably got ahead of myself because I was asked how do you go about turning Valentino Rossi into a Grand Prix driver.

"To me that would be the programme to follow if Valentino wants to go Grand Prix racing. But he has indicated he has not made that decision yet, so I think we need to wait and see what he wants to do."

There is a chance that Rossi could get behind the wheel of a Ferrari again before the end of the season, but Brawn added that a decision on that has not yet been made.

"Obviously he is I the middle of a championship so we will wait and see," he added.

"I don't think anything is committed, he wants to get his championship out of the way and decide what he is going to do."
